Growing on Instagram and creating an authentic audience in hard in 2020. With millions of users all wanting the same thing, to use the platform to become successful; getting your name out there and growing on the platform is no mean feet.
I am by no means and Instagram expert, but I’ve been on the platform long enough to be able to share a few tips at growing your audience and getting yourself noticed.
The biggest thing, which kind of goes without saying is be original in the content you are producing. Understandably, it isn’t always easy to come up with innovative ideas when you’re faced with SO many competitors, but you want to showcase something that makes you stand out and makes your account different to all of the other fashion accounts (for example).
Have A Style
Much like creating original content makes you stand out, you also want a recognisable style. Whether that be the way in which you edit photos or even the way in which you frame and compose your photos, you want to have a recognisable style and business.
I think this is one of the most important things, yet also one of the hardest. It wasn’t until the start of this year that I really started to establish my editing style and make my account much more personal. If you look at my feed there is a coherence to it, all thanks to the style.
I would suggest that you spend as much time establishing your style and what makes your photos different as you would brainstorming original content ideas.
Share Your Story
Opening up on social media isn’t easy, well I know for me it isn’t anyway! I really don’t like the thought of sharing the more vulnerable side to me with my followers. Having said this, they are the people that want to get to know the real you.
Social media can be very misleading. All of these perfectly framed, photographed and edited photos can lead us all to think that these people have perfect lives, when in actual fact its probably far from the truth.
I’m not saying you should open up about your deepest, darkest insecurities, but I’ve found the more personal and honest I am, the more my followers respect me. They know that I don’t have the perfect Instagram life, no matter what they see!
Provide Valuable Content
Once you’ve established your niche and your style and how you’re going to make this original content, you want to ensure the content your creating is providing value. I found the best way for me to provide valuable content was to find out what I love to read from other Instagram posts and use this to inspire my post content, as I’m passionate about it too.
Whether you interests are in inspiring people, educating people, or even if you have a passion for a topic which you want to share like Body Positivity for instance! Talk about the things that interest you most and provide you with the most value, because chances are, they will provide your following with the most value too!
I can’t stress how important this one is! People aren’t going to want to follow an account which doesn’t engage with their following.
When I first started my instagram, I was mega guilty of not engaging with my audience. However once I started to comment on other peoples posts, make friends within the platform who share the same interests, I really saw an increase in my engagement. Which was particularly reassuring to see.
I guess much like providing your story, when you get chatting to people on line on their posts or stories, they are getting to know the real you, not just the Instagram perfect you!
Show Your Face
I guess this is more if your Instagram is used for a business which doesn’t include your face. For example, I have my blog business Instagram, which my face is always cropping up on. But my crochet business Instagram, my face didn’t make an appearance for quite some time, which I think was a mistake.
People want to know the person behind your business. If you’re not the most confident person, don’t push yourself out of your comfort zone too much, but work your way up to posting a picture of who you really are. You’re followers will really appreciate it!
