What I Wish I Knew Before I Started Blogging

So I’ve been blogging for about 4 months now, which is just crazy! It only feels like yesterday I set it up! Over the past 4 months my blog has grown quite quickly, but alongside this I have also learnt A LOT about the blogging community, and found out things that I wish I had known before, which is exactly what this post is dedicated to! If you’re a fellow blogger, let me know whether you agree with the points that I have made, also if there’s anything that you wish you had known before you took it up! And for those of you who are looking into starting a blog, then this is the post for you!

So I thought that planning and keeping up with a blogging schedule would be a breeze, I mean every blogger that I knew seemed to do it with such ease, but boy was I wrong! When I first began blogging I was on summer holiday, so I was able to dedicate quite a bit of time to it, but once I started university, keeping up with 2 posts a week got increasingly harder. I wont lie, its hard to schedule/write posts, balanced with a degree, job, social life and training.

Before starting a blog I was never really too active across my social media platforms, I mean don’t get me wrong I loved a good Instagram picture, but it wasn’t anything I took too seriously. Then as soon as I started my blog, I quickly realised how important it is to be consistent in engaging with your audience through various social media plat forms. If I didn’t promote myself of places like twitter and Instagram, then I wouldn’t have the following that I do so on my blog.

Don’t blog about something that you aren’t genuinely interested in. I remember when I started blogging, I did a couple of beauty related posts and hated writing them, that was purely because I didn’t have much of a interest in that niche. But then as soon as I started writing about things that I am passionate about like fashion/design, and lifestyle I enjoyed it so much more! I also found that my stats went up dramatically when I started to write about what I loved, not what I thought someone else might love.

In the real world, you do a job and get paid for it, right? Apparently not in the blogging world. I have been contacted by so many companies over the past 4 months, and I have been amazed at the amount that haven’t offered to pay, me for writing for them Granted there have been a fair few that have offered, but the ones that haven’t, do you really think us bloggers are always going to work for free?

Stats really shouldn’t make a difference to your blog, you should be writing and blogging because you enjoy it, not to gain a following, the following is just a bonus. Too many people get so hung up on stats, and as important as they are to a degree, its really key to not get too worked up over them, as long as you are enjoying what you are doing!

I hope you have enjoyed reading through this, there are so many other things that I wish I had known before starting out in the blogging industry, but these are just some of the key ones!

University Room Tour

Something that I had been itching to do ever since I moved in was a little university room tour. I can’t believe I’m only just getting round to doing it now, but better late than never right? So here are some cute snippets of my room, which is actually quite nice for a university room, even if I do say so myself!

When applying to university back last year, alongside being excited to start my degree, I was also just as excited to be able to decorate my university room, exactly how I wanted it. Being an Interior Textile student I put a lot of thought into my little university room and wanted to make it as cozy as possible – which of course meant a tonne of fairy lights, polaroid pictures and lots of cute nick knacks.

So before I moved in, I had already decided that I wanted a rose gold and white theme in my room with a few hints of pink and mustard. So as you can probably see from the photos everything is very well coordinated!

Sportswear Wishlist

Being into my sports and fitness, sportswear is my weakness, I’m constantly on the look out for new running gear, which my bank account doesn’t really appreciate. There is a lot out at the moment that I quite like the look of, but I’m having to be very careful with my money, therefore I thought I would create a little wish list of sportswear that I currently love, and can come back to when I have the chance to have a little splurge!

I feel like I’m probably the worst excuse for a fitness enthusiast because I don’t own even 1 item from Gymshark. I’ve toyed with the idea of making an order for a while now, but every time I add things to my basket the price always stops me, although its not too overpriced, its quite expensive on a student budget! There’s a set that I have wanted for a while now, and it’s the light grey with pink highlights set. Something I love about the Gymshark work out gear is how well it fits, it always looks so figure hugging, but in a very flattering way. On my wish list I opted for the cropped top, as I much prefer cropped tops to longer fitting ones, and I tend to struggle to find cropped sportswear.

There are also a couple of pairs of leggings that I have had my eye on for a while now too, both being from Nike, and basically being the same legging, but different. My Mum would tell me that I don’t need both as they are so similar, but I’m too indecisive to decide which ones I prefer. They are both black and full length, so perfect for winter, with the only difference of course being the logo size. For some people the ones with Nike going the whole way down the leg might be a bit too much and in your face, but I quite like it.

One of these is technically a jacket, but I didn’t want to add another category. So, basically I have been using my Mums cycling jacket to run in for the longest time now, its bright yellow, you can’t miss me. But I recently came across this peach one and absolutely love it. Such a gorgeous colour and SO cheap, which is rare because often running/sportswear jackets are mega expensive.

Lastly the cut out burgundy top, which admittedly wouldn’t really be great for winter, but it is a really pretty style. Its also slightly different to anything that I’ve got in my sportswear collection, so that makes me feel a bit better about spending more money!

I’m sure you can expect to see many more sportswear wish lists from me as I am constantly on the look out for new bits! Where is your favorite place to shop for sportswear?

Chocolate Orange Cheesecake

I’m currently sat writing this blog post in the biggest food coma EVER! If you have a sweet tooth, or you’re just a general cheesecake lover, like myself, then this is the recipe for you.

Before we get started, I would just like to give full credit to Tanya Bakes, by Tanya Burr, for coming up with this wonderful recipe, and I will leave a link to her baking book below, and make sure that you grab yourself a copy if you can!

300g Double Chocolate Cookies

100g Melted Butter

Zests of 2 Oranges

250g Full-Fat Cream Cheese

150g Icing Sugar

200g Terry’s Chocolate Orange

150g Double Cream

  • Begin by crushing the biscuits into crumbs, I find the best way to do this is to pop them all into a food bag, and gently bash them with a heavy rolling pin. Mix in the melted butter and zest of 1 orange, add to a 21cm round loose-bottomed cake tin, to create the base of your cheesecake.
  • Combine the cream cheese and icing sugar using an electric whisk, set aside until needed.
  • Melt the 200g of Chocolate Orange in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Whiles the chocolate is melting, in a separate bowl whip up the cream so that it forms soft peaks; if you tip the bowl over your head, it shouldn’t fall out! You then want to set this aside and wait for the melted chocolate to slightly cool, before mixing it into the double cream.
  • Add the chocolate mix to the cream cheese mix, and gently fold in, until well combined.
  • Pour the final mixture over the biscuit base, and leave to set. I find it best to make the cheesecake the night before serving so that it has the whole of the night to set. Just before serving decorate with the remaining chocolate orange, and the orange zest.

I’ve never really been a fan of chocolate orange, and could give or take it when given the opportunity, but this cheesecake, I can assure you, is one of the best things you’ll ever taste, and its NO BAKE!!! What more could you want! I hope you enjoy, if you’re an avid baker like myself, I highly recommend Tanyas’ book!

University So Far…

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 15.28.48As I am writing this I have survived my first 3 weeks of university!!! WOOO GO ME!! Needless to say there have been a few tears and a bit of self-doubt, but apart from a couple of blips, I have so far had the best, busiest and most exciting 3 weeks of my life.

I had high expectations for freshers week, and although I was hit with freshers flu 3 days in, it was still a brilliant time. It taught me a lot about myself, which I wasn’t expecting. I now know that I’m not a massive drinker and never will be – and there’s nothing wrong with that. Freshers allowed me to meet a whole range of people and make some amazing friendships; I instantly clicked with the people I share a flat/floor with, alongside finding my possible future housemates too. Not only this but I’ve made some fab friends on my course as well.

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 15.28.59

With a whole whirlwind of different emotions going on, mixed with a very busy social schedule, it didn’t take long for me to get a bit homesick, but I guess this was expected. After and long phone call with Dad, a few tears, and a few motivational words, I was ready to take on the world again. Something I really struggle with is my confidence, I doubt myself A LOT, so I frequently thought that I wasn’t good enough for the course or university life in general, but soon realised I was being silly, and needed to just throw myself into everything, and start working on believing in myself.

Workload wise, I’m on an Art and Design course so my timetable is fairly packed, whereas some of my flat mates have a couple of days of a week, I’m in for all 5, all day. Which I don’t mind at all (am I even a student), I even don’t mind the 9AM starts! I prefer to be lay out all my art stuff and have the space to make a mess, rather than make a mess in my little room then pay £250 to get something replaced.

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 15.28.35

That leads on nicely to the last thing I wanted to cover, that being my little university room. I think one of the things that I was most excited about was decorating my own university room, and I wont lie it is the cutest university room (and cleanest) that I have ever come across; if you would like to see a room tour, you can find that HERE. I don’t like having a massive room, because I don’t take up much space, and feel a bit lost and lonely in a big room all on my own, so although its small, it’s the perfect size for me!

So I guess you could say that I’ve settled into university really well, and I am loving my time here. I’m sure you can expect to see from me many more posts about university!

I hope to see you all in my next post,

All my love,

Han xx
