Those of you who have been following my blog for a while now, will know that I recently moved out to university, so of course being a first year, I had the whole freshers experience to come. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every minute of freshers, but it was far from what I expected. It taught me a lot about myself, which took me by surprise, so, I thought I would share with you these things that I learnt.
DRINKING
Freshers week is associated with a lot of drinking and a lot of going out, which I expected, and I wont lie, I thought I would be able to hack going out every night, oh how wrong I was. I’m not a massive drinker; I don’t enjoy the taste of alcohol, it also messes up my training, which is why I tend to steer clear of it. I arrived at university thinking this wouldn’t be a problem, only to find out that everyone looks so baffled when you tell them this. I’m quite a strong minded person, so this didn’t bother me too much, I didn’t let this pressure me into drinking, but for some people who may not be as strong willed, this probably would have been their worst nightmare.
SOCAILISE
Over the past year I’ve turned into someone who loves talking to everyone, which is another reason why I was so excited to start university. One of the most important pieces of advice I could give anyone starting freshers is to try and talk to everyone you can, whether that be people in your flat, on your course, or just people wandering around your block; it’s the best way to make friends, and also see who you’re going to be spending the next few years with.
TIME
I won’t lie; I think freshers may have been the quickest week of my life. I’m sat here writing this post 2 weeks after I moved in, which is mad. It feels like I’ve been here ages, but also just goes to show how quick time goes when you’re enjoying yourself. In order to make the most of my time at freshers, I found it so helpful to make lists of things that were going on that day, and different social activities that I had going on, it just helped me to stay organized and also get the most out of my freshers experience.
SOCIETIES
Societies are another brilliant way to make friends, and there is a society for everyone. Harry Potter fans, there’s one for that. Lover of cocktails? Then the cocktail society is for you! Or if you’re like me and into your sports and fitness, it’s a great way to find like-minded people. I signed up to the running society, as I am a runner, and it’s full of people that all have the same interests as me, meaning we all get along really well.
HOMESICKNESS
I was so excited about moving into university, that the prospect of homesickness didn’t really cross my mind, but when freshers flu hit me hard, and I was rather ill, tired and emotional, that’s when I began to get very homesick. I won’t lie, there were a few tears while I was on the phone to my Dad, but it was quickly overcome. I think it’s important to remember that its okay to feel like this, after all, moving out for the first time is incredibly daunting. In order to combat the homesickness, I just threw myself into university life, attending all the freshers day and evening events, preliminary lectures, and flat gatherings. These were the best ways to keep myself occupied and not miss home!
Freshers was a massive learning curve for me, and I am so glad that I got to experience it. It has allowed me to meet so many new people, make some life long friends, and also experience some pretty cool social opportunities!
I hope you have all enjoyed reading my first of many university posts, and I hope to see you all in my next post!
All my love,
Han xx
I love the fact that there’s a society for everyone 🙂 makes me feel that no one gets left alone, that’s amazing. Glad to hear about your first week 🙂

This is such a lovely post! I didn’t go to much of my fresher’s week because I’m not a big drinker at all, so I feel like I might have missed out a lot now!

I was so emotional when I spoke to my parents for the first time! I thought I would too, but because everyone is all in the same boat, it was so easy!

I totally agree with societies and drinking, I can’t drink loads because of a health condition and on my freshers week people were so confused as to why I didn’t drink every night. The film and Harry potter society were also my favs in first year – there’s so many societies there really is one for everyone.

It sounds like you’ve learnt a LOT about uni and yourself over Freshers week! I didn’t go to uni –
I’m 25 now so highly doubtful that I would. But back when I was 18, I would have LOVED Freshers week because I was hugely social and a big going outer and drinker. I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol now for years so Freshers wouldn’t be ideal for me now haha! xxx

I am quite petite so cannot handle large volumes of alcohol and often felt pressure during freshers to drink more than i could physically handle so I totally understand your first point. Im glad you were able to stand up for yourself 🙂 xx

I think during freshers week you get sick of drinking as that is all everyone does. You definitely meet some new people, I think freshers week is such a good thing. I hope your homesickness is alright still, I hope you enjoy uni too!

I love the part about drinking. I think uni is related with a lot of drinking but if you don’t want to you don’t have to; there’s a lot of opportunities to do non-drinking activities. You can have a good night without being drunk!
